Matthew Blais received his Bachelors in Fine Arts from Illinois State University in 1979, concentrating on the printmaking processes (lithography/intaglio) and drawing.
Photography had been part of his daily life since the 70's, but more as way to document or use as reference for his drawing and printmaking.
After exploring digital cameras in the late 90's for his graphic work and later in "for hire" work, he realized how much he missed being more involved in the creative process.
Migrating back to film in 2002, he later discovered large format film cameras, and was soon passionately entrenched in this historic format.
Most of his photographs are captured on 4”x5” and 8”x10” sheet film, with medium format and 35mm employed on occasion.
Matthew enjoys the art of crafting an image by hand. As such, all of his fine art work is recorded on film, printed by traditional darkroom methods and processed to modern archival standards.
Each photograph is individualy hand printed by the photographer in a limited edition of no more than 30 from each negative.
Prints are made using Fiber Based Silver Gelatin Paper, and hand coated archival papers for Platinum/Palladium, Van Dyke Brown and Cyanotype. All prints are signed on mount below print and in verso with photographers stamp.
Mount board is 4 ply Bainbridge Alpharag Artcare® and 8 ply Alpharag Artcare® overmat. This is purportedly the finest archival mount board to date.
Matthew's background as a traditional printmaker, artist, and graphic designer enables him to look at photography in a unique manner.
Matthew Blais currently resides in Riverside, California.
